Russia Blamed For Cyber-Attack That Shut Down Port of Los Angeles Last Year

Russia is being blamed for a cyber-attack that took down the Port of Los Angeles' largest terminal for three days last June.

“In June 2017, the Russian military launched the most destructive and costly cyber-attack in history,” the White House wrote in a statement released Thursday afternoon.

The attack began on June 27th, as a ransomeware program called notPetya, spread to the port's computers, locking users out of their computers until they paid a $300 ransom in bitcoin. However, those that paid the ransom were never able to recover their files.

The attack shut down operations at the largest terminal for three days before they were able to reopen on June 30th.

Shipping company Maersk said they estimated the attack cost the company up to $300 million.

In a statement, the White House said the cyber-attack would be "met with international consequences."

Russia has denied being behind the attack.

The ransomware hit companies in six countries, including Ukraine, the United States, India, and Australia. Computers in Ukraine were the first to be attacked, with the virus spreading to banks, airports, hospitals and grocery stores across Europe.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said the attack was part of the Kremlin's ongoing efforts to destabilize Ukraine.

“The destructive attack masqueraded as ransomware, but its purpose was principally to disrupt,” the UK government said in a statement.
