Rutgers men's basketball coach Steve Pikiell announced on Wednesday (September 9) that he is stepping away from his coaching duties to undergo treatment for cancer. The 58-year-old coach revealed that he was diagnosed a few months ago and has since had successful surgery to remove the cancer. Pikiell will undergo chemotherapy in the coming months to prevent a recurrence.
In a letter to the Rutgers community, Pikiell expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his doctors at RWJBarnabas Health and Memorial Sloan Kettering. He stated, "After a successful surgery, my doctors and I have a kick-ass game plan to finish treatment." Despite his diagnosis, Pikiell plans to remain involved with the team as much as possible during his treatment.
Associate head coach Brandin Knight will take over the leadership of the Scarlet Knights in Pikiell's absence. Rutgers athletic director Keli Zinn confirmed there is no set timeline for Pikiell's return, but she expressed confidence in Knight's ability to lead the team during this challenging time.
Pikiell, who joined Rutgers in 2016, led the Scarlet Knights to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 30 years in 2021. The team is set to begin its 2026-27 season on November 6 against New Haven. Pikiell's commitment to the program and his players is evident, as he plans to stay involved to the best of his ability during his recovery.
The Scarlet Knights recently secured a verbal commitment from four-star guard R.J. Moore, a top-60 Class of 2027 prospect, highlighting the program's promising future. Pikiell's leadership and dedication have left a lasting impact on the team, and his presence will be missed on the sidelines.
