The San Francisco 49ers will begin their season without defensive tackle Alfred Collins, who suffered a season-ending knee injury during practice in Melbourne, Australia, on Tuesday (September 8). Collins tore his patellar tendon, a significant setback for the team as they prepare for their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Friday (September 10).
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the injury, noting that Collins' absence adds to the challenge of an already depleted defensive line. "That is a big loss," Shanahan said, as reported by the Mercury News. Collins, a second-year player and 2025 second-round pick, was expected to start as the nose tackle this season. His notable performance last year included a game-winning fumble recovery against the Rams.
With the team already in Australia, the 49ers face logistical challenges in finding a replacement. The most likely candidate to fill Collins' spot is Kevin Givens, who has been with the team since 2019 and has experience in a rotational role. Another option is Sebastian Valdez, although his lack of NFL experience makes him a less likely choice.
The 49ers are also dealing with other injuries on their defensive line. Defensive end Sam Okuayinonu is out with a foot injury, and several players, including Gracen Halton and Romello Height, are limited due to injuries. Despite these challenges, star players Nick Bosa and George Kittle are expected to play, albeit with limited snaps, as they recover from their own injuries.
The Rams will also be without defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who did not travel with the team to Australia. Shanahan expressed relief at not having to face Donald in the opener, as noted by SFGate.
