LSU has decided not to add former NFL rookies Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to its football roster, despite a court ruling in their favor. The decision comes amid a legal conflict involving the NCAA, SEC, and LSU over eligibility rules for players with professional experience.
On Thursday (September 3), a judge ruled that Wright and Harris could join LSU's roster, but LSU opted not to include them, potentially to avoid conflict with the SEC. The conference had filed a federal lawsuit against LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin, arguing that recruiting professional athletes violated conference rules.
Both players, who previously played in the NFL, had hoped to join LSU for the upcoming season. Wright, a former Ole Miss tight end, and Harris, a defensive tackle, were cleared by the court to return to college football, but LSU's decision leaves them off the team for now.
LSU President Wade Rousse stated that the school is reviewing the court's order and aims to work with the SEC and NCAA. Meanwhile, the SEC maintains its stance against professional players returning to college sports, citing a new rule that bans such practices.
Attorney Ryan Downton, representing Wright and Harris, expressed disappointment in LSU's decision, stating he might pursue legal action for contempt of court. The SEC's lawsuit against LSU is still pending, and the conference's presidents are set to meet to discuss potential repercussions for LSU's actions.
