A judge has ruled that Elijah Bieniemy, the son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, is competent to stand trial. Elijah, 27, is accused of shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy, at their home in Ashburn, Virginia, in late July. The court's decision follows a mental health evaluation requested by his defense team.
According to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred around 7:32 p.m. on a Sunday evening. Mia Bieniemy, 57, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital. She has since been moved out of the ICU and is reportedly in stable condition. Notably, Mia herself called 911 following the shooting.
Elijah Bieniemy faces several felony charges, including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. Yahoo Sports reported that the Chiefs organization is aware of the incident but has not provided further comments.
Elijah's next court appearance is scheduled for November.
