The controlling owners of the Denver Broncos, Greg and Carrie Walton Penner, are looking to expand their sports portfolio by acquiring a majority interest in the Colorado Rockies. The Penners, who currently own 40% of the MLB team, are reportedly planning to increase their stake to 75%. This move will depend on the resolution of the ongoing collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations in Major League Baseball.
The Penners initially bought a 40% stake in the Rockies in April, acquiring it from the current controlling owners, Dick and Charles Monfort. This acquisition occurred as the Rockies were beginning another challenging season, though they have shown improvement since their historically poor performance in 2025. According to the Denver Gazette, the Penners are expected to acquire an additional 35% of the team once the CBA is settled.
The current CBA discussions are contentious, with the MLB Players Association opposing a salary cap, while owners, led by Monfort, are advocating for one. The resolution of these negotiations is crucial, as it could lead to a lockout of the 2027 season. The Penners have demonstrated their financial acumen in the past, notably managing the Denver Broncos through significant financial challenges, and they hope to bring similar success to the Rockies.
The Sports Business Journal reports that the Monforts are likely to retain about 20% of the Rockies, with other minor stakeholders holding the remaining shares. The Penners' potential acquisition of the Rockies would mark a significant shift in Denver's sports landscape, as they aim to replicate the Broncos' success in baseball.
