The Atlanta Falcons are in the midst of a quarterback competition as Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa split first-team reps at training camp today (Monday, August 24). This development comes as Penix returns to team drills for the first time since recovering from a torn ACL suffered late last season. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has indicated that both quarterbacks will see action in the preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins on Friday (August 28), though he has not confirmed whether Penix will start with the first unit.

Penix, who was cleared for 11-on-11 work over the weekend, is eager to prove himself as a contender for the starting position. According to Yahoo Sports, Penix's return adds intrigue to the competition, especially after Tagovailoa's struggles during the preseason. Tagovailoa, who started the preseason opener, admitted to needing improvement after a lackluster performance against the Broncos, where he completed just three of five passes for 22 yards.

Meanwhile, The Fantasy Footballers reports that the Falcons have yet to decide on a starting quarterback for their Week One game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 13. The coaching staff, including quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt, is focused on evaluating footwork and timing as part of their new offensive system.

The Falcons' decision-makers are keen on ensuring a fair competition, despite Penix's recent return from injury. As AtlantaFalcons.com highlights, Van Pelt emphasized the importance of footwork in quarterback success, a key area of focus for both Penix and Tagovailoa.

As the preseason finale approaches, the Falcons will continue to assess both quarterbacks to determine who gives the team the best chance to succeed in the upcoming season.
