Tensions flared during a joint practice between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants on Thursday (August 20) at the Baptist Health Training Complex in Florida. According to Yahoo Sports, multiple players were removed from the field following several scuffles, with Giants quarterback Jameis Winston and right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor among those ejected. Dolphins offensive tackle Austin Jackson was also removed after reportedly throwing a punch at Giants rookie Arvell Reese.
Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley had warned players that any physical altercations would lead to ejections. Despite this, emotions ran high, leading to multiple altercations. According to ESPN, Jackson was shoved to the ground by Giants linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux after the punch, but later returned to practice.
Giants coach John Harbaugh downplayed the incidents, emphasizing that such skirmishes are common in joint practices. He stated, "As long as it doesn't get out of control, where it gets a violent-type situation, it's fine." Harbaugh also noted that Eluemunor's punch to a face mask would have resulted in a penalty during a game.
The NFL has been clear about not tolerating violence during joint practices, and will review the footage to determine if any penalties are warranted, as reported by CBS Sports. Both teams will meet again on Saturday for a preseason game at Hard Rock Stadium.
