The FBI has contacted law enforcement agencies in Mexico as part of its expanding investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, according to multiple sources familiar with the case.
The outreach to Mexican authorities comes as the search enters its third week with no arrests made and no confirmed sightings of Guthrie since she vanished from her Tucson, Arizona home on January 31.
The investigation has produced several potential leads but no breakthrough. A glove found two miles from Guthrie's home failed to match DNA samples from the crime scene or produce a hit in the national CODIS database. Investigators are now focusing on DNA recovered from inside Guthrie's residence that doesn't match her or anyone known to have visited recently.
Surveillance footage released by the FBI shows a masked individual approaching Guthrie's front door in the early hours of February 1. The suspect appears to be approximately 5'9" to 5'10" with an average build, wearing gloves and carrying what investigators believe is a holstered weapon.
Sheriff Nanos recently noted that investigators are examining whether the suspect may have been wearing a ring beneath his glove — a detail spotted by viewers analyzing the footage. "I look at the same photo you look at, and I get, I see it," Nanos told NBC News. "I'm going to give that to my team. They'll analyze it and we'll see."
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to Guthrie's location or to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.
