The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly "working towards a deal to hire" former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero on Saturday (January 24).

McCarthy, 62, is a Pittsburgh native and a former Super Bowl champion during his stint with the Packers, with a 174-112-2 career head coaching record.

"Coming home: The Steelers are working towards a deal to hire Mike McCarthy as their head coach, per sources. McCarthy grew up in Pittsburgh. Now, at age 62, the Super Bowl winner gets a chance to coach the team he grew up rooting for," Pelissero wrote on his X account. "Mike McCarthy has been one of the NFL’s most successful coaches over the past two decades, winning over 60% of his games with 12 playoff trips in 18 seasons with the Packers and Cowboys. Now, he’s set to coach another one of the most iconic franchises in football."

McCarthy spent 13 years with the Packers from 2006 from 2018 and went 125-77-2, which included nine playoff appearances. The Pittsburgh native spent five seasons with the Cowboys from 2020 to 2024, which included three consecutive playoff berths from 2021 to 2023, before the team opted not to renew his deal last offseason.

McCarthy could potentially reunite with his longtime former quarterback Aaron Rodgers upon his reported Steelers hiring. Rodgers, 42, who was coached by McCarthy for 13 of his 18 seasons in Green Bay, signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh last offseason, though many speculate it was his last NFL season.

McCarthy will also reportedly become only the fourth Steelers coach since 1969, following Pro Football Hall of Famers Chuck Noll (1969-1991) and Bill Cowher (1992-2006), as well as Mike Tomlin, who resigned earlier this month after 19 seasons.
