Auburn has fired head football coach Hugh Freeze, athletic director John Cohen confirmed in a statement shared on the athletic department's official website Sunday (November 2).

“I have informed Coach Freeze of my decision to make a change in leadership with the Auburn Football program," Cohen said. "Coach Freeze is a man of integrity, and we are appreciative of his investment in Auburn and his relentless work over the last three years in bolstering our roster. Our expectations for Auburn Football are to annually compete for championships and the search for the next leader of Auburn Football begins immediately.”

Auburn defensive coordinator and linebackers coach D.J. Durkin, who had previously worked as Maryland's head coach from 2016 to 2018, will serve as interim. The decision came hours after the Tigers lost 10-3 to Kentucky at home Saturday (November 1) night, dropping to 4-5 (1-5 SEC) through nine games in 2025.

Auburn has gone 15-19 (6-16 SEC) during three seasons under Freeze, who had previously worked as Ole Miss' head coach for five seasons before resigning over a personal misconduct, specifically an incident in 2017 in which a university-issued phone was used to call escort services, as well as Liberty from 2019 to 2022.
