The Boston Red Sox have traded three-time All-Star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, the team confirmed in a post shared on its X account Sunday (June 15).

"The #RedSox today traded 3B/DH Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, in exchange for LHP Kyle Harrison, RHP Jordan Hicks, minor league OF James Tibbs III, and minor league RHP Jose Bello. Harrison has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester," the Red Sox wrote. "To make room on the 40-man roster, the club designated LHP Zach Penrod for assignment."

The Giants will cover the remainder of Devers' contract, which will run through the 2033 season and is due to pay him more than $250 million during that span, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Devers, 28, is currently hitting for a .272 average with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs and is widely regarded as one of the league's best hitters, having won the Silver Slugger Award for the second time in his career last season.

"The Rafael Devers-to-San Francisco blockbuster has executives across baseball confounded. On one hand, the Red Sox got out from a deal every model in baseball has as underwater — and got talent back. On the other, a team with talent and momentum just traded its best hitter," Passan wrote on his X account. "What’s clear: Buster Posey is running the Giants to win and win now — $250 million-plus owed Devers be damned. And five years after the Red Sox moved Mookie Betts, Craig Breslow made a deal he knew would be very unpopular because the math said it was a very good one for Boston."
